| The Challenge |
Keeping everyone on the same page proves to be both an Art and a Science. The re-engineering of a course registration process enabled Hesston an opportunity to extend the list of course offerings online, enroll students across the internet, and distribute course availability management to every faculty and administrtative member of Hesston.
Hesston college is a two-year Mennonite college offering approx 500 students opportunities for degrees in the Arts and Sciences, with Aviation and Nursing the most popular studies. Being a relatively small school, the registration process takes place among a small number of advisors, faculty and registration staff. Although the staff is small, keeping all students' schedules on track is a complicated task considering class size limitations and instructor availability.
Being a two-year college, the additional challenge is the percentage of new students that are in attendance for their first year of school is nearly half. This process involves not only registration, but enrollment as well. Most of this engagment and preliminary process is not done at the school, but via traditional communications with the student while finishing high-school in the previous spring or summer. |
| The Solution |
The "ONCORE" system enables everyone in the course management and registration process to be involved.
Course management and registration are integrated with a source DB2 database running on two iSeries servers. The Lotus Enterprise Integrator middleware solution keeps the information synchronized.
Students can now register virtually anywhere, anytime during the active enrollment periods. Courses can now be monitored and checked at any time for enrollment status. The information is always up to date and allows the Office of the Registrar many more options when balancing class loads and course offerings. |
