The Challenge
The McLeodUSA project involved the complete conversion of 128 Lotus Notes databases to a unified intranet base of applications accessed only through a browser.
McLeodUSA's application environment was a complicated structure running on various platforms. Through their extensive, record-breaking growth, most of their applications had evolved from small 'home-grown' projects to supporting thousands of concurrent users in a daily production environment. The initial phase of the project involved reviewing the existing Lotus infrastructure deployed at over 11,000 desktops, and its 250 in-house databases. From the original application base, 128 were chosen to be included in the conversion project.
Phase two consisted of implementing both a development environment and developmental standards. Ixion developers provided a non-conversion list of standard Lotus Notes client functions that were not readily available in a web application. Several reusable code widgets were built in addition to an entire code library for the project.
Phase Three involved several roll outs of applications from the Test environment to a Q&A environment, and finally to a production Lotus R5 environment. |
The Solution
The application migration began by interviewing existing application owners and determining proper application migration priorities. Each application was compared against a complex application migration matrix that included migration time, application complexity, resource/skillset availability, and end user testing availability. TeamStudio CIAO was implemented and three tiered development began on each application, adhering to predefined development and design standards. Milestone development markers were identified and tracked by Project Managers while allowing for tracked/monitored scope changes throughout the entire migration process. Working closely with the pre-existing McLeod intranet development team enabled Ixion developers to deliver web enabled Domino application that fit seamlessly into the existing McLeod intranet.
The Benefits
Ixion identified a list of functions that would not natively migrate from R4 Notes to a web application. We built customized portable widgets that provided a resolution to this loss of functionality during migration. We assisted in refining several business processes during the development of these web applications. Several mission critical applications were successfully deployed on schedule and numerous new development techniques were discovered.
