The Challenge
The initial challenge was building www.skaugenonline.com, a website providing lightering information to Skaugen's clients in the maritime industry. The website needed to act as an intranet, providing access to internal resources for their employees, and an extranet so that their clients could view client-specific data. All of the web content needed to be modified by Skaugen personnel and not a web developer. In addition, Skaugen wanted the ability to manage who accessed their site and what information they could see.
The second challenge was building an online application called S.M.A.R.T., which synchronized data from Skaugen ships to the www.skaugenonline.com website. |
The Solution
The skaugenonline.com site was built entirely on Lotus Domino technology and connected to a SQL database via Lotus Enterprise Integration (LEI). Many aspects of the website are configurable by Skaugen administrators via web console. Content managers can manage the look and feel of the content on the website as well. Administrators can manage users, roles, and even what information can be displayed all via a web console. Skaugen's clients can login and view their own specific voyage information, setup preferences, and even manage their own accounts. After a successful launch of this website, Ixion built a wireless interface for the website for the use on Palm devices.
The Benefits
This project started by examining Skaugen's then current process for receiving updates from their ships at sea. Ixion developers knew that the end solutions would have to be portable, user friendly, and be able to deliver the information electronically back to the skaugenonline.com website. A Domino Off-line Services (DOLS) solution was built that provided a web interface for the ships to enter data offline and then synchronize the data back to the main website. A portable, easily maintained, and dynamic solution that revolutionized the maritime industy.
